Abbe de Faria
The statue on the west side of the Adilshah Palace (the old secretariat) of a man hypnotising a woman, which is located in a small square, is that of Jose Custodio Faria (Abbe de Faria), a Goan priest from Candolim. He was born in Candolim in 1756. He was ordained in Rome and then moved to Paris. His research on hypnotism in Paris has earned him the title “Father of Hypnotism”. He died in 1819. He published a seminal text on hypnosis “On the Cause of Lucid Sleep”.
This statue was erected on September 20, 1945.
